At worst, it means being drawn into combat the moment you get off one mount, and having to fight it out before you can get on the next. Which can be quite annoying, especially when trying to rapidly move from one mini boss to the next and get there in time to get participation credit.

To get the springer you need to complete a heart in the second map of either Path of Fire or End of Dragons, and doing that requires a character who is actually level 80.
There are 6 Mastery Points that can be reached with the base raptor. They are called insights. See the first table in the link above. Collect all 6 mastery points and earn enough experience to unlock canyon jumping mastery for the raptor mount. Then, go to Highjump Ranch in Desert Highlands and do the heart.
Skyscale is nice for places where you need to gain altitude. If anything, the Skycale surpassed the Springer mount (but that being said, I like the Springer's attack much better!). The Raptor is imho still a great mount for where the Griffon can't help. Personally I find the Roller Beetle useless in that regard.

You'll probably find it easier to fully master the Springer and to take the Skimmer at least as far as Ride the Wind. This is correct. . 613 870 837 333 631 391 126 901
